The Best Things to do in Plettenberg Bay
1. Robberg Nature Reserve
Robberg Nature Reserve is one of our fav activities in Plettenberg Bay’s. This rugged peninsula offers three well-marked hiking routes, each catering to different fitness levels:
- The Gap (2.1 km) | the shortest option and perfect for those seeking a quick walk with ocean views, though seeing seals here is mostly a matter of luck
- Witsand (5.5 km) | a moderate trail and a popular choice – it’s long enough to feel adventurous without being too demanding. This route takes you to excellent vantage points where seals gather in large numbers, often basking on the rocks below
- The Point (9.2 km) | is the longest and most challenging, offering the most complete tour of the reserve’s coastal scenery
Your journey begins at the parking area, which is usually quiet in the early morning. A small stand nearby sells coffee and snacks – perfect for fueling up before your hike. Once on the trail, expect a mix of wooden steps, sandy paths, and rocky boardwalks as you navigate the ever-changing landscape. The reserve’s natural beauty unfolds: from sweeping ocean panoramas to sightings of dolphins and whales during the right seasons.
The middle and longer routes offer the best chances to observe seals in their natural habitat.
We chose the Witsand route and spent about two hours on the trail, which felt just right. It was neither too short nor too exhausting, and we enjoyed plenty of stops to take in the views and watch the seals. Clear signage, clean facilities, and safe paths make Robberg accessible and enjoyable.
Just don’t forget water, sunscreen (!), and your camera – this reserve captures the wild essence of Plettenberg Bay like no other.

2. Market Off Main
For a relaxed and local experience, head to Market Off Main in Plettenberg Bay. This lively market offers a mix of handcrafted goods, local produce, and street food. It’s the perfect place to browse souvenirs, chat with friendly vendors, or simply slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.
We spent a leisurely afternoon here, sipping on Aperol Spritz while playing Backgammon and gazing out towards the ocean – the laid-back vibe made it easy to lose track of time. One special feature adds a bit of excitement: a bell near the market entrance, which visitors ring whenever they spot dolphins in the bay.
Whether you’re there for shopping or simply soaking up the scene, Market Off Main captures the easygoing spirit of Plett perfectly.

3. Dinner at Barrington’s
Barrington’s is a stylish spot that offers a farm-to-table menu featuring seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. You can enjoy the house-brewed craft beers and artisanal bread baked daily on-site. The atmosphere is warm and elegant, perfect for a night out.
In summer/autumn (european winter), choose to dine outside on the terrace. A must-visit for foodies exploring things to do in Plettenberg Bay.
4. Breakfast at The Palms Plett
Start your day right at The Palms Plett, our absolute favorite breakfast spot in town. This stylish café offers hearty and healthy options, from smashed avocado toast to classic eggs Benedict. Vegan and gluten-free dishes are also on the menu, paired with freshly brewed coffee or refreshing smoothies.
We had a table with a direct view of the lagoon (reservation recommended), which created a peaceful and scenic backdrop for our meal. Besides being a top choice for breakfast, The Palms also offers rooms for those wanting to stay overnight – though you’ll need to budget a little more for this upscale option.
Whether you’re there for the food, the view, or the laid-back vibe, it’s a place that quickly feels like home in Plettenberg Bay.
5. Lookout Beach
Lookout Beach is the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the sun. This wide, sandy beach offers spectacular views of the bay and surrounding mountains, especially from the Whale Tail Lookout Point – the similar view you enjoy when sitting at The Palms Plett. It’s ideal for:
- Swimmers & Sunbathers
- Beginner surfers (The Wreck Beach also suitable for surfers)
- Bodyboarders
- Families (lifeguards on duty during peak season)
Pack a picnic or visit nearby cafés for a snack break. Dolphin and whale sightings are common in season. Early mornings are perfect for peaceful walks, and the sunsets here are unforgettable. Lookout Beach truly belongs on your Plettenberg Bay itinerary.

6. Little Run at the Beach
We recommend a little run or walk along the coast. We drove a short distance and then started our run through the seaside neighborhood at the beginning of Robberg 5 Beach, continuing along the scenic Sanctuary Beach.
The route was peaceful, with little traffic, and led us onto wooden boardwalks offering incredible ocean views. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to avoid the heat. On your way, you might even pass by the sweetest little bench, dedicated to Monica and Bill Harris. <3
The combination of quiet streets, beach paths, and lookout points makes this a rewarding and beautiful route.
Things to Do Around Plettenberg Bay
Besides all the activities and things to do in Plettenberg Bay, the area around Plett is packed with even more to be explored.
Keurbooms River
Just a short drive from Plett, Keurbooms River is ideal for renting a kayak or taking a boat cruise to explore the water. The river winds through lush forests and towering cliffs.
Pack a picnic and find a secluded beach along the riverbank. Fishing is also popular, with bream and leervis common catches and water skiing is available too. The peaceful surroundings make it perfect for relaxation.
Tsitsikamma National Park
The Tsitsikamma National Park is located about 70 kilometers and just an hour’s drive from Plettenberg Bay. Note that you’ll pass through a toll road (4 USD) on the way to this spectacular coastal paradise. Once there, you’ll find beautiful landscapes, dense forests, and plenty of trails for all levels.
Popular hikes include the iconic Otter Trail and the shorter, scenic Waterfall Trail. The suspension bridge over the roaring Storms River mouth is a must-see, especially combined with the Mouth and Lookout Trail. If you’re up for more excitement, activities like canyoning, black tubing, river rafting, ziplining, and snorkeling are available too.
We didn’t manage to try it, but kayaking through the gorge is said to be an unforgettable experience – and is definitely on our list for next time! The park is home to a rich marine reserve, so keep an eye out for dolphins and whales during your visit.
You can stay overnight in the park, but if not, it’s best to arrive early to make the most of your day. With picnic areas, restaurants, and endless adventure opportunities, Tsitsikamma is supposed to be the perfect day trip from Plettenberg Bay.

Horse Back Riding in Kurland
Explore Plett’s stunning landscapes on horseback – several local stables offer guided rides suited for all skill levels. From fynbos fields and forest trails to beach rides, the options are diverse. Sunset rides, in particular, are very popular, and many tours are beginner-friendly with knowledgeable guides and well-cared-for horses. It’s a great activity for couples, families, and solo travelers alike. Booking in advance, especially during peak season, is recommended.
One of the best choices while searching for the best things to do in Plettenberg is Kurland Park Horse Trails, just a short drive from Plettenberg Bay. This renowned estate, famous for its polo grounds, offers a variety of rides:
- 1-hour ride through forest and farmland
- 2-hour ride along the Hol River and through the forest (our choice!)
- Wine & Ride Tour with tapas and wine tasting
- Romantic package with a wine ride and couples massage
We opted for the 2-hour ride and found it perfect – long enough to explore but easy to manage as beginners. Our route took us past open fields with grazing sheep, through shady forests, and alongside curious baboons (who thankfully kept their distance). The horses were calm and our guide made the experience fun and informative. A particularly funny moment was Juli’s horse stopping frequently to snack, then rushing to catch up with the group. Whether you’re new to riding or more experienced, this outing is a fantastic way to discover the peaceful, green surroundings of Plettenberg Bay.

Birds of Eden
Birds of Eden, located just about 10 minutes from Plettenberg Bay, is the world’s largest free-flight aviary and home to more than 3,500 birds from around the world. Elevated walkways take visitors through a lush, forest-like environment where you can see colorful parrots, flamingos, and toucans.
If you’re interested in birds, this is probably a good choice. Educational signage throughout makes it informative, def appealing for those truly passionate about birdwatching.

Knysna
Knysna, located just a 30-minute drive from Plettenberg Bay, is often mentioned as a Garden Route highlight. However, for us, it wasn’t the top spot we expected. If you’re choosing between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, we would definitely recommend staying in Plett – it simply offers more charm and variety in our view.
That said, Knysna does have its highlights: The Knysna Heads are spectacular and offer breathtaking views of the lagoon meeting the ocean. This spot alone makes a visit worthwhile.
However, we personally found the waterfront promenade less appealing. While it offers plenty of dining options and boat cruises, it felt touristy, and – as often with such areas – the food was overpriced and not particularly memorable in our experience.
Knysna is still a nice option for a relaxed day trip, especially for nature lovers or those wanting to explore the Knysna Heads and its lagoon. Just manage your expectations, and you’ll still enjoy what this neighboring town has to offer.

Positioned between Knysna and Tsitsikamma National Park, Plettenberg Bay sits on South Africa’s southern coastline, offering easy access to some of the region’s most spectacular natural attractions.

Plettenberg Bay offers a range of accommodations for all budgets. From luxury lodges like The Plettenberg Hotel to cozy guesthouses and Airbnb options, there’s something for everyone. Families will appreciate self-catering units, while couples may prefer boutique hotels. Campsites are also available for adventurous travelers.
Book early during peak seasons like summer (european winter) and school holidays.
Where to sleep in Plettenberg Bay
During our stay, we chose an Airbnb which was clean and well-equipped, but overall felt a bit impersonal. The balcony and shared spaces lacked the inviting atmosphere we were hoping for, and next time, we might consider a different option. We had initially considered the Ivory Haus (more in the next paragraph), which looked a lot more charming, but decided against it due to the price during high season. If comfort and atmosphere are important to you, it might be worth spending a little more.
Fortunately, Plettenberg Bay offers plenty of alternatives for every budget:
Budget: Urban Plett
- Close to the center of Plettenberg
- Clean, well-equipped apartments with kitchenettes, private bathrooms, and some with dining areas or terraces
- Free parking, a garden and and a shared terrace for guests to relax
Mid-range: Ocean Watch Guest House
- Coastal guesthouse located on the hillside of Plettenberg Bay, about a 10-minute walk from the beach, featuring a sun terrace and an outdoor pool with sea views
- Rooms offer TVs, minibars, and private bathrooms; some have sea views
- Close to restaurants and cafés
Luxury: The Ivory Haus
- Located just 500 meters from Lookout Beach
- 4-star hotel with an outdoor pool, garden, restaurant, and bar. Some rooms offer balconies with sea views
- Rooms are well-equipped with air conditioning and modern bathrooms. Breakfast options include à la carte, continental, and English.
